The Mercedes-Benz Logo History
In 1890, Gottlieb Daimler founded the company that would become Mercedes-Benz, then called Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, DMG. It was almost immediately taken over by William Maybach and Emil Jellinek. That said, Daimler’s sons Paul and Adolf would stay involved for years to come.
Moving into the 20th century, the two brothers had a conversation about their heritage in 1909 when they recalled a postcard their father had sent them years earlier in 1872. It marked the location of their home on a German map with a 3-pointed star. Months later, DMG acquired the rights to that star and emblazoned it upon all of their vehicles.
The first creative liberty was to make the star blue. In 1926, a laurel border was added. Finally, the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star was changed from blue to silver in 1934.
The Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning
For many years, the Mercedes-Benz logo meaning of the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star simply referred to the origin story of this then-burgeoning manufacturer. Today Mercedes-Benz officials will have it that the logo actually refers to the company’s drive for universal motorization. Each point signifies a different type of terrain, from land to sea to air, each of which the Daimler brothers expected to conquer.
